With
some really good movies coming up, all eyes are set on Samina Peerzada’s
Shararat and Rauf Khalid’s Laaj. While Shararat has long been
in the making creating a lot of hype. Laaj has also been the talked
about coming movie, these days. Mostly because of Zara Sheikh and
Imran Khan as being the lead cast of the movie once again after Chalo
Ishq Larain.
Rauf Khalid has been famous for his Kashmir based patriotic plays
like Angar Wadi and Laag was in Lahore a few days ago for the shooting
of his movie when we talked about his new venture Laaj, that is making
waves around the whole country. Is Laaj another patriotic movie in
connection with your previous attempts on the telly screen, “Laaj
is not just a patriotic movie, but it also a romantic movie”.

| The
story of the film is about a Pashtoon guy who kidnapped a young Hindu
girl who happened to be the daughter of Sth Gulab Chand, a wealthy
Hindu. The girl converted Islam and married the guy but the Hindus
of the area started giving false impression that the girl has been
kidnapped and has not converted to Islam. Thus a war erupted between
Britishers and Pakhtoons which lasted for 11 years. “No one
convinced me into this too, I conceived the idea and am trying to
portray it. It as a pre-tradition true story”. |

At
first movie was titled Laaj-Once Upon A Time but later on it was changed
to “Death Before Dishonour”. Rauf who produced his earlier
two plays himself, this project was some what bigger and costly and
thus this time some of his friends produced it:
“I was the producer of Angar Wadi and Laag, but this time my
friends are co-operating with me and producing it. They like me and
are not concerned whether we get the money back or not, because we
are committed to one cause and that is to make a good movie, one that
has some international standard. We must have atleast one movie that
we can presents in some festivals, and Inshallah Laaj is an effort
to do”.
“I know I need a lot of experience to work on before delving
into such a big project but I am doing my bit of work with honesty.
I am basically an artist have done nothing considerable, have directed
just two plays, written a |

movie
and that makes me nobody in show biz world capable enough to direct
a movie”. The best thing that Rauf himself pointed out about
Laaj is that “I have done the whole shooting on different locations,
like I shot in the Governor house of Frontier and it is the first
time in the history of Pakistan that shooting was done there. In Angar
Wadi and Laag, I had to create an atmosphere of the other side of
the border and this time I am creating an atmosphere of 1930’s”. |
When
asked about the cast of the film, Rauf was of the opinion that after
this film Imran and Zara both would be totally different actors and
persons. Zara is a brilliant actress, she will prove to be one of
the long lasting heroines of Lollywood”. He was thoroughly impressed
by Resham who contacted herself for the movie, She even went ahead
and told everyone that I was not casting her but today I feel that
she is much better than Reema, she can portray a Hindu girl in a much
better manner”.
Around 60% of the shooting of the movie has been completed and Rauf
has planned to release this movie in January. We hope that this film
will live up to the expectations of the viewers.
